Educational Leadership - CUL

Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Education and Human Resource Studies

The Educational Leadership Ph.D. specialization - College and University Distance Cohort (CUL), is designed to provide a Ph.D. program that is specifically focused on leadership within Colleges and Universities through distance delivery. As a special version of the Educational Leadership specialization, this cohort is targeted to those who desire the knowledge and competencies that are acquired through doctoral studies with the intent of assuming leadership roles within the higher education sector. This program will be especially attractive to student affairs administrators and other administrative personnel currently employed at four year colleges and research universities, who want to pursue a doctorate while still being employed full-time.

Program Objectives

The College and University Leadership Cohort Program is designed to meet the needs of persons interested in leadership positions within administration at higher education institutions.

The program will specifically enable current practitioners and administrators to develop the competencies and improve their practice in order to become more accomplished leaders and to enable them to seek more advanced leadership roles within higher education. The program objectives are :

  • To provide a comprehensive doctoral curriculum that develops the competencies needed to successfully and ethically lead higher education institutions.
  • To develop research knowledge and skills to enable practitioners and administrators to become scholar/ practitioners and expand the knowledge base related to higher education organizations, practice, and outcomes.
  • To instill and/or reinforce a commitment to the crucial engagement of diversity and attend to and address issues of privilege and oppression.
  • To provide opportunities to explore and develop ways to strengthen a commitment to access, learning, institutional mission, quality, and educational outcomes.

Unique Program Characteristics

This program is a 60 hour, post masters program. The program of study is structured to include 30 hours of higher education administrative content and 30 hours of research credits. Comprehensive exams both written and oral, a juried publication submission or presentation as well as a dissertation are also required.

The program delivery system is predominantly distance, with on campus, summer, condensed course work and advising. The program will operate within a cohort model and will accept applications once a year. Students will be required to travel to Fort Collins for a 8-9 day extended week in July each year and 2 days in January preceding the beginning of the spring semester. The six hours of course work during both the fall and spring semesters will be taken via computer and telecommunication delivery. The program is designed to be completed in four or five years, while the student remains employed full-time at an institution of higher education.

Course Work Schedule

The cohort would also return to campus in January just prior to the spring term for two days of advising, course orientation for the spring semester, cohort community building, and personal faculty interaction. These dates are the Thursday and Friday before Spring Semester begins.

The course work during the fall and spring semesters, six hours each of the semesters, would be taken through distance telecommunications and the on-line format.
