Master of Education Degree in Education and Human Resource Studies
This specialization is designed for individuals preparing for leadership positions in education. A student may select a program leading to a M.Ed. with an emphasis in Instruction/Special Needs (Option 1); or Administration (Option 2); Teacher Licensure and Master of Education (Option 3).
Program participants will:
- Develop the leadership skills to direct educational programs
- Become facilitators of educational change
- Implement new approaches to solving the problems confronting education
Program Requirements
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and demonstrate leadership potential. Admitted students will complete the Core courses and one of the three options related to their career goals. The degree requires 36 semester credits of academic course work for Options 1 and 2. A brief description of courses can be found in the Colorado State University General Catalog.
Option 1. Instruction/Special Needs
This option is most appropriate for practicing teachers who wish to enhance their instructional skills and take on instructional leadership responsibilities. Candidates may choose to do a thesis (Plan A) or a professional paper (Plan B).
Option 2. Administration
This option incorporates course work for the principal's license. Candidates must have three years of teaching experience, a valid teaching license. and must apply for the principal's cohort, which requires recommendation from a supervisor with an agreement to provide opportunities to complete the internship and concurrent seminars. Candidates holding a Vocational Credential may qualify for a Vocational Administrator's Endorsement by having a minimum of 20 semester credits in professional vocational education plus completing EDUC 601, EDCT 612, and a 3-credit internship (EDUC 687) under the supervision of a Vocational Education Director.
Option 3. Teacher Licensure and Master of Education
This option will be structured as a cohort based MEd program similar to the current principal licensure option. It will focus on the development and licensing of teachers who have already received their undergraduate degrees in specific content areas. The need for this program is based on the desire to develop mature, highly qualified teachers whose practice is grounded in research and theory. The program will foster an understanding of strong pedagogical skills, as well as a deep understanding of effective theories of learning. The program will strive to meet the growing needs of schools for highly qualified teachers, including those in high-demand areas such as science, technology, engineering, and math.
